Sedation Dentistry in Chesapeake, VA
Apprehensive dental patients can select Sedation Dentistry
For most nervous individuals, our team's gentle, friendly and lighthearted approach to dentistry will put them at ease. For others, relaxation comes because we carefully explain the forthcoming procedures, treat them at their own pace and stop when they ask us to. However, some patients need more. For those individuals, Dr. Paul offers Sedation Dentistry.
After experiencing sedation dentistry with Dr. Paul, you'll always feel comfortable in his dental office. Sedation dentistry relaxes you to the point where you are unaware of the treatment being rendered. You'll wake up refreshed with little or no remembrance of what was done. Sedation dentistry can be used to perform any type of dental procedure.

What does Sedation Dentistry involve?
Sedation Dentistry can be accomplished with nitrous oxide (laughing gas), with oral medication, or a combination of both. If nitrous oxide is used, a mask is placed over your nose and nitrous oxide is inhaled, along with oxygen. The level of nitrous oxide is adjusted until you are very relaxed. The advantage of inhaling a gas is that after treatment is completed, the nitrous is flushed from your body and you can return to your regular daily duties with no after effects.
If oral medication is employed, a small pill is taken one hour prior to your appointment. You will need a driver to transport you to your appointment and to take you home. When you arrive for your appointment, you will already be relaxed. You will be escorted to a comfortable room covered with a warm blanket, placed on a monitor and allowed to relax. When you are sufficiently relaxed, Dr. Paul and his team will take care of your dental needs. When your treatment is completed, your driver can take you home to sleep.
Facts about Sedation Dentistry.
Sedation Dentistry is very safe. You will take a small pill before your appointment and/or wear a nasal mask. There are no needles or intravenous lines involved. Although you will not be sleeping (most of the time), you will be relaxed to the point of not caring about the dental care being rendered.
The medications that are used have a long record for safety. A thorough health history, blood pressure, pulse, and oxygen saturation is taken on each patient. The medications presently being taken are checked by computer software to prevent any negative medication interactions. A monitor is used to follow the patient's vital signs during treatment. Our office is committed to a "Go Slow" approach in order to ensure a comfortable and successful outcome.
Who should be a candidate for sedation?
- People who have neglected their oral health care out of fear.
- People who have had a traumatic experience.
- People who have a bad gag reflex.
- People who require a lot of dental care and/or surgery.
- People who are medically compromised.
- People who are bothered by the sounds and smell of the dental office.
- People who want to get as much dentistry done in one setting as possible.
What procedures can be done under sedation?
Although Sedation Dentistry is most commonly used for removal of wisdom teeth, for bone grafting, for placing implants, and for completing root canals, it can be employed to carry out even the simplest dental procedure. Fillings can be done, teeth can be cleaned, chipped teeth repaired, and crown procedures completed. Sedation is especially helpful for patients who gag easily and need to have impressions taken – so sedation is very useful for patients who want to bleach their teeth, who need dentures or partials, or need to have study models.
